Central Asian Cooperation on Water Issues and Ways of Its Improvement

Abstract

Conflicts arising over transboundary water resources are the most dangerous and widespread disputes in the world because their consequences might be the water shortage and military oppositions. In Central Asia the issue emanates from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, which became the apple of discord for the five countries pursuing their national interests above interstate interaction, and even efforts of international organizations can not improve the situation significantly. However, it can be changed through movement of political decisions from multilateral to bilateral agreements and provide mutually beneficial settlements on the use of all energetic resources including water.
