Abstract: This research is focused on the last turn to more assimilationist approach taken in the early 1990s with the increase of censorships and control over Xinjiang and later with the start of “Strike Hard, Maximum Pressure” and “Great Western Development” campaigns that both are aimed to undermine common Uyghur identity, prevent separatism and inter-ethnic conflicts, and, in more long-term perspective, assimilate Uyghurs into Chinese culture
