Abstract: | The speech of native speakers is permeated with idioms. They use them quite naturally without any difficulty. But for those studying a foreign language idioms may be challenging for sometimes they are not only a part of the language but also a part of culture of this or that country. The author of this article supports those who find it necessary to present and master idioms in cultural context and demonstrates how it is possible to do with the idioms dealing with holidays. American University of Central Asia being an international university presents excellent opportunities for discussing various subjects in cultural context. Students can be motivated to use their own experience and the knowledge of their countries’ unique culture. When students use new idioms creatively speaking about things familiar to them, these idioms become an active part of their language. On the other hand, students of other countries also benefit learning new facts about diverse cultures and becoming closer to each other. |
